North Smethwick Development Trust began life in 1988 as a residents association and then became an incorporated organisation in 1992 and a registered charity. The organisation has strong roots in the neighbourhood of North Smethwick and is a well-established, independent community led organisation. The Trust is locally owned by board of 8 volunteers, 6 of whom live in the neighbourhood of North Smethwick. In addition, the Trust is supported by local volunteers.
The Trust is a community anchor organisation and an essential partner for agencies working in North Smethwick and the wider area. We run a wide range of activities at the centre and have a long standing reputation for offering needs-led community activities, often in partnership with local voluntary organisations and statutory agencies. We also run several small social enterprises employing local people and hire out our community facilities to local families at an affordable rate.
We are host for the local neighbourhood tasking meeting where issues affecting local people such as anti-social behaviour, environmental issues are shared and acted upon and local councillor surgeries are also held at the centre.
