Fundraising Campaign for Community Defibrillator

On behalf of the John Ellis family in partnership with North Smethwick Development Trust we are launching the John Ellis Community Public Access Defibrillator (CPAD) Campaign.  Through the purchase of a AED (portable defibrillator) and community training in CPR more lives can be saved.  The total project is £2,000 with a contribution being sought from the British Heart Foundation and personal donations, this will be a legacy to John’s memory locally.

We know that communities play a big part in creating a nation of life savers.

We are asking people to help us fund a defibrillator at our community centre and train people in CPR so that more people will know what to do when someone has a cardiac arrest.

It is the case that every minute someone is in cardiac arrest without CPR and access to a defibrillator, their chances of survival drops by up to 10%.  Having a public access defibrillator available in an emergency can be life saving.

An AED is a portable defibrillator especially designed for people with little or no medical background. When applied to the victim, voice commands and screen messages will guide the user step-by-step through the process and its intelligent technology will only allow it to shock a ‘shockable’ heart rhythm. AED technology opens a window for the public to take on a key role to support emergency services who would otherwise be hindered by the time it takes to reach the victim. It is argued that AEDs should be as broadly deployed as fire extinguishers and first aid kits.
