Comic Relief, Fareshare & a Michelin Star Chef come to Brasshouse

On the 20th February 2019, we welcomed the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen Team, Fareshare West Midlands and Fareshare UK and the Celebrity Michelin star Chef Glynn Purnell to showcase our weekly Community Meal in aid of Comic Relief‘s campaign appeal for Red Nose Day 2019

Why? to promote a fantastic cause FareShare, a food distribution charity. They help us by providing surplus food so we can support our free weekly food programme for our community.

Laura Spencer, Development Manager – Fareshare West Midlands said “We couldn’t have chosen a better organisation to showcase how our food changes people’s lives for the better. Thank you so much Jenn and Anthony, and all the staff at Brasshouse, for being such accommodating and patient hosts, and to all the service users for being so welcoming and creating such a wonderful atmosphere on the day. I’m so proud to say that Brasshouse is one of the organisations we support – you really do make amazing things happen, and it’s so inspiring to see.”

Chair of the Board of Trustee’s, Anthony McFarlane said “such a fabulous day, a big thank you to Glynn Purnell and Fareshare UK (and the West Midlands Team) … a very big thank you to the local community for there support. Today highlights the important fact that in a modern economy, people should not have to overpay for food, we should not have such a waste of food, we should be able to make sure that we are able to feed ourselves consistently”

Jenn Harrison BEM, CEO of North Smethwick Development Trust said “As a registered charity, we are extremely thankful of the service and support that Fareshare provides, through our 2 and a half year partnership, over 10,000 free meals have been able to be provided to local people in Smethwick, West Bromwich and West Birmingham, to people most in need.    The support we get from Fareshare (part funded through Comic Relief) also means that through the community meal programme, people who would otherwise be lonely or isolated, suffer from addiction or mental health issues have somewhere to go and get support from the number of partnership agencies we work with that offer additional support services.”

Richard Blackburn, Assistant Producer, Comic Relief Team said “It was such a lovely day, and really nice to meet all of you in person. Thank you for all being so welcoming and helping the day run so smoothly. Pass on my thanks to everyone at FareShare and NSDT for all their help too! Thanks again for such a brilliant day!”

Tune in to BBC 1’s Saturday Kitchen on Saturday 2nd March 2019 at 10am to see the final edits and interviews from Glynn Purnell with our CEO, Jenn Harrison and community members.

Huge thanks to everyone who supported the day and this only goes to raise the profile of the importance of people having access to good food, and reducing food waste.  If you would like to support our cause of working to ensure no one goes hungry, please make a a donation to North Smethwick Development Trust
